1. Why is lucerne and pea straw mulches better than using sugar cane mulch?
The main reason is that it enriches the soil with nutrients and it lasts for months. Healthy soil means healthy plants and less fertilizer. Bark, woodchips and sugar cane do the opposite; depleting the soil of nitrogen as it breaks down.
2. How much should I use?
Spread a layer of 80mm for the first time.
If re-mulching spread to a depth of 40mm.
Remove weeds before mulching. Don’t let the mulch get too close to the stem of the plant.
Water in well or better still, apply immediately after rain.
